The Presentation

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. To be eligible, each Candidate must be in high school and must have met the predetermined prerequisites. Once deemed eligible, Girl Scout Gold Award Candidates will design a passion project that identifies a national or global issue and address it with a sustainable outcome. When ready with a proposal, Candidates will go through a stringent approval process to receive Council’s permission to proceed.

Gold Award Candidates take lead as Project Manager and agree to invest at least 80 hours while addressing their identified topic and working towards the desired outcome. As Project Manager, Gold Award Candidates are exposed to life skills, such as: budgeting, communication, networking, organization, researching, and becoming comfortable with public speaking.

Gold Award Candidates also learn the administrative skills of project management, such as: documenting the process, analyzing the data, and submitting reports. These life skills help Gold Award Candidates be an asset to society, as well as a more productive member of society.

As incredible as the opportunity to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award is, unfortunately less than 6% of eligible Girl Scouts earn their Gold Award each year. In doing my research, I learned one strong reason is because members of society just don’t know what the Girl Scout Gold Award is, what it entails, and what it means to be a Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient. Because of this lack of awareness, combined with the amount of time and energy earning the Gold Award encompasses, most girls in high school tend to trade their time and energy for activities more known to society. My belief is: knowledge is power! Hence, my Girl Scout Gold Award Passion Project is to help more people learn what the Girl Scout Gold Award is, what it entails, and what it means to be a Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient.

To Recap:

What is the The Girl Scout Gold Award:

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest Award a Girl Scout can earn; it is an individually-earned Award.

     What it Entails:

It entails a Girl Scout enrolled in High School identifying a National or Global Issue taking lead as Project                Manager of their designed sustainable solution while committing to investing at least 80 hours towards                successfully completing their project.

What it Means to be a Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient:

Being a Gold Award Recipient means a Candidate has learned valuable life skills that has better                prepared her to work as a leader and a collaborator while navigating through decisions and surprises to                generate quality output in all environments, most specifically College and the Workforce.

I believe that if more people know about the Girl Scout Gold Award, then the Candidates and the Award will receive the recognition it deserves and the support that it needs. And ultimately, because more members of society are aware of the Girl Scout Gold Award, then more eligible Girl Scouts will be encouraged to pursue their Girl Scout Gold Award, and whilst in pursuit of earning their Gold Award, learn life skills to become a more productive contributing member of society, and each of their passion projects will help better our world.
